9-Year-Old Girl Dies After Palm Tree Falls on Her While Playing on Obstacle Course Strap

A 9-year-old boy who was hurt and taken to the hospital after the incident is expected to survive, authorities said

A 9-year-old Florida girl died after a palm tree fell on top of her while she was playing outside with friends on Sunday, authorities said.

Deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office told CBS affiliate WPEC-TV, ABC affiliate WPBF-TV and NBC affiliate WPTV-TV that the girl was playing on a strap that was attached to two trees when one of them fell on her in the Smith Farm gated community in Lake Worth Beach.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived at the scene shortly after 6 p.m. after a report of a cardiac arrest in the 6500 block of Marbletree Lane, according to the Sun Sentinel.

The girl and a 9-year-old boy were transported to Delray Beach Medical Center, while a third person was taken to a local emergency room, per the newspaper.

The girl was later pronounced dead, while the boy is expected to survive, the Sun Sentinel reported. The extent of the third person's injuries wasn't immediately clear.

The children were playing on an obstacle course when the accident occurred, the girl’s parents told authorities, according to the paper, WPEC-TV and WPTV-TV. Her identity has not been released at this time.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for additional information.

Detectives later confirmed that the tree had some rotting inside, WPTV reported.

Authorities said the tragedy appeared to be accidental but that an investigation is ongoing, according to WPBF.
