9 sexiest shows on US TV we can't believe were allowed

Americans might have a reputation for being prudes compared to us liberal Brits… but that's complete and utter nonsense. We've already examined the sexiest shows to make it on to British TV, but to be honest, they have nothing on the complete and utter filth that's been produced over in the States…

1. Girls (2012-2017)

Girls set out its sexy stall right from the beginning, with heaps of nudity and graphic scenes (admittedly, they're not always exactly a turn-on, given how HIDEOUSLY AWKWARD they can be). But it's not just the pure volume of sex scenes but the content within them: Marnie being rimmed by Desi is a gif that's going to haunt us for a long, long time. We're honestly not quite sure how they got away with most of Girls.

2. True Blood (2008-2014)

There's always been a strong link between sex and vampires, but True Blood took that to a whole new level. It wasn't just implied anymore; it felt like everywhere you looked, someone was naked, and with V-induced shagging and enforced mystical orgies in the woods going on, you were never too far away from someone's bum popping up on your TV.

There was even that hate-sex scene between Bill and Lorena which couldn't be described as mind-blowing so much as LITERALLY HEAD-TWISTING.

3. Spartacus (2010-2013)

Spartacus was basically a teenage boy's dream about gladiators – in other words, AWESOME. Blood and guts were all part of the fun, but the show didn't stop at violence – nope, there was loads of full-frontal nudity and gratuitous sex thrown in to the mix too.

Orgies, accidental hate sex, people dying while on the job… It's all in there.

4. Rome (2005-2007)

There's something about the classic period that gives producers licence to get really filthy. As with Spartacus, Rome didn't give its characters much chance to show off their togas because they were normally naked.

Ann Widdecombe was not impressed, dubbing it "akin to a porn movie" and a "feast of decadence"… Which doesn't exactly put us off, to be honest.

5. Game of Thrones (2011-present)

It had to be in here, didn't it? Game of Thrones has never shied away from dumping in completely irrelevant nudity to amp up the sauce factor, although sometimes it's also actually part of the plot.

Mind you, that doesn't stop there being an awful lot of it. And it's sex in all its forms, with prostitution, incest and even bloodsucking leeches all getting a fair crack of the whip (as it were). Naturally, it featured on our list of the most gratuitous nude scenes on TV

6. Reign (2013-present)

Compared to some of the shows on this list, Reign is pretty tame – but it's still far dirtier than it has any right to be. Reign made clear that it was going to tend towards the bodice-ripping end of the costume drama genre from the very beginning, with one character (played by Neighbours star Caitlin Stasey) rushing off to give herself some… relief after spying on a couple consummating their marriage.

There have been plenty of ruffled ruffs on the show ever since, with a particular highlight being King Henry shagging one woman so vigorously that she fell out of a window to her death.

7. American Horror Story (2011-present)

Don't get too excited – there might be a lot of sex in American Horror Story, but much of it is too disturbing to be titillating. From gimp suits to post-coital death; from genital-swapped incest to bestiality, and even a party that will make you see your nan's Tupperware in a whole new way, nothing is sacred on American Horror Story. Ew.

8. Outlander (2014-present)

On the face of it, a TV show about a World War II nurse finding herself transported back to Scotland in the 1740s doesn't sound that racy. But while you might have assumed it was the sort of show made for your mum, it's actually absolutely jam-packed with sex on top of sex. (Which doesn't rule out your mum, of course.)

But Outlander has actually won praise for focusing on female sexuality and pleasure. Phew, is it getting hot in here?

9. Sex and the City (1998-2004)

Look, "sex" is right there in the title… and Sex and the City didn't disappoint when it came to naughty moments. Everyone was constantly ripping their clothes off for a roll in the hay, and nothing was off limits, either. Butt-licking, sex toys, dirty talk, masturbation – what more do you want? Also, we have to mention Samantha and that fireman. Ahem.
