92nd Guid Nychburris will be a day to remember

The 92nd Guid Nychburris Day will be held in Dumfries today with an afternoon of entertainment, crowning and charter ceremony, fancy dress competition and early evening parade.

It is the culmination of events in the run up to the big day including Monday’s installation of principals at the Planestanes and the announcement of Anne Muskett as this year’s Guid Nychbur and the junior Guid Nychburs, Madison and Willow at a ceremony in The Usual Place.

This year’s Cornet Ross Boyd and Cornet’s Lass Caitlin McKenzie will head the special day which will see Dumfries Academy pupil Lucy Galligan crowned Queen of the South at noon on the stage near the Midsteeple. Her attendants are Lexi Scott and Emily Wallace, key bearers Erin McCluskey and Sophie Harkness, and the singer is Abbie Hogg.

There will also be the pomp of the charter ceremony with this year’s Guid Nychburris principals playing a part, including lynors Robbie Mcilwraith, Euan Douglas, Evan Chandler and Andrew Neil, pursuivant David McCulloch and courier Will Black.

Connor Nelson and Riley True will host the entertainment at the Planestanes from 10.45am to 4.40pm, including: Ultimate Dance Group, Old Friends Singing Duo, DG Cheer cheerleaders, Next Level dance group, The Roadrunner children’s entertainer, Attitude Dance Group, The Guild of Players Youth Theatre Group, DJ Connor Nelson, Verity Power fire eater, Meg Oliver and RHELM Band. From 10am to 4pm there will also be activities on the High Street and Queensberry Square to add to the carnival atmosphere: Reids Amusements, stilt walker, Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes, Sparkle and Pop face painters/glitter tattoos, Oasis Youth Centre/ Youth Beatz, and Kingdom of Creatures.

The Children’s Fancy Dress competition takes place at 2pm and can also join in the parade which leaves Newall Terrace at 5pm on a route around the town. Souvenir programmes with full details of tomorrows events are on sale.
