A Salute to TV’s Yaas Kweenz

It’s March, which means everyone should be celebrating Women’s History Month. If you’re not, then you need to take a serious look in the mirror and question everything you ever thought you knew about yourself.

Right, now that you’re all reflecting about how awesome women are I thought we could take a look at the television shows that are SLAYING right now. They also all happen to star incredibly hilarious, strong, ambitious and talented women.

If you’re not already hooked to Abbi and Ilana then you need to get on that Broad City shit, ASAP. This show is like nothing on our screens and the ladies are unapologetically crass, high and drunk the entire time. Apart from introducing us to the best stuffed toy, Bingo Bronson, Broad City has also taught me that all nights should be about “finding a 10″. And for that, I thank you.

Girls. Created by the all wondrous human that is Lena Dunham, the show brought many to a stand still with Dunham’s nonchalant attitude to getting her breasts out. Girls also proves that not all female characters on tv need to be likeable or nice. Already in it’s 5th season, it’s going to be really difficult saying goodbye when the show ends next year. Until then, I’m going to soak up as much of Hannah Horvath as I can!

Queen of all Queens, Julia Louise-Dreyfus she really outdoes herself with her role as Selena Meyer on Veep. I’ve been such a fan of Louise-Dreyfus since her Elaine days and I swear the woman just does not age. The show would not work without her comic genius or real potty mouth.

Moving away from comedy to drama. I am obsessed with How to Get Away with Murder. Viola Davis slays as the all-powerful and all-knowing Annalise Keating who manages to win all her cases while hiding murders and protecting an ungrateful bunch of wannabe lawyers. Davis is such a force and she rightly earned her Emmy last year.

Then there’s Transparent. Created, written and directed by the incomparable Jill Soloway, the show is one of my favourites out there at the moment. Soloway created the show to tell the story of her own father’s transition. It’s probably one of the most honest shows on television right now and the cast all bring something so unique to the table. Jeffrey Tambor gives the performance of a lifetime as Maura aka MaPa and my spirit animal Gabby Hoffman brings such vulnerability to the show. Honestly Ms Soloway, I bow down to you.

Don’t forget Mindy Kaling who brings so much joy to my existence with The Mindy Project. I will admit that I don’t watch this show as religiously as I should and for that I apologise Mindy, I will be better.

Of course a huge yaas to Amy Schumer and her show Inside Amy Schumer. The comedian had an insanely successful time last year and produced gems like Last F**kable Day and Milk Milk Lemonade. And she killed it with her first film, Trainwreck. The woman is just full of wise truths, love her!

And finally, I cannot wait for Issa Rae’s new show, Insecure, to air on HBO. If you haven’t heard of Issa, please do yourself a favour and go watch her hilarious series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, you will not regret it.

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking, do I actually watch all these shows? The answer is yes, yes I do. You’re also probably wondering where I get the time for all of it and the answer is I make the time. When there are such talented women creating incredible shows, what is one to do? I am also desperately unemployed, so that helps.

Nevertheless, I advice everyone to start watching at least one, if not all, of these shows. So take a seat, crack open a drink, get a pizza and let’s celebrate women!

And to all you telly kweens, making me laugh, cry and laugh some more, I raise a hand and I salute you.
