Large stretches of the A120 are set to be closed overnight in order for National Highways to carry out upgrade work. Road workers are refreshing the road markings on the A120 between Stansted and Panner's Great Notley Interchange near Braintree.

The work is planned to last 11 weeks starting from Monday (June 24). Work will be carried out on weeknights only, between 8pm and 6am and weather permitting, but could have an impact on people travelling close to Stansted Airport.

A notice shared by National Highways said the work was to "ensure the A120 continues to remain in a safe and serviceable condition". The closures are to be carried out in stages with the first beginning on June 24 and running until July 10.

This closure will be between Dunmow South Interchange and Blake End Interchange on the A120 eastbound. Traffic heading eastbound will be diverted off the A120 at Dunmow South Interchange, onto the B1256 (Chelmsford Road/Dunmow Bypass) and merge onto Braintree Road to Blake End Interchange. Motorists will then re-join the A120.

The second closure is on the A120 eastbound between Bassingbourne roundabout and Dunmow South Interchange from July 11 to August 8. Traffic wishing to travel on the A120 will be diverted from the M11 (Birchanger Green roundabout) onto the B1256 (Stortford Road/Dunmow bypass) to rejoin the A120 at Dunmow south Interchange.

This closure between Bassingbourne and Dunmow South could have an impact on motorists travelling in and around the area of Stansted Airport. Always plan journeys in advance and check before travelling to avoid delays.

Between August 9 and August 27 (dates subject to change) the A120 will be closed westbound between Dunmow West Interchange and Priory Wood roundabout. Westbound traffic will be diverted off the A120 at Dunmow west interchange along the B1256 to Birchanger Green roundabout.

The final closure is scheduled, but subject to change, for August 28 to September 2 and runs on the A120 eastbound between Dunmow South Interchange and Panner’s Great Notley Interchange. Eastbound traffic will be diverted of the A120 at Dunmow south interchange and onto the B1008 (Chelmsford Road) then A131 before re-joining the A120 at Great Notley Interchange

Work on this stretch of the A120 includes replacing the safety barrier and road signs, resurfacing, road studs (cat's eyes), road lines and other safety improvements. A National Highways spokesperson said: "The work here is essential, as it will increase the life expectancy of the road and make journeys safer for motorists.

"We’ll make the most of the road closures by carrying out as much work as possible. This will reduce the need for us to have more road closures in the near future. We're doing the work in two phases. Phase 1 was completed during 2023. Phase 2 will be done during 2024.

"Road users will benefit from a new central reservation safety barrier from Panners interchange to Marks Farm as well as some new signs. There will also be a new road surface on the eastbound side from Panners to Galleys Corner with new road marking and studs to improve reflectivity and visibility."
