Celebrations are in full swing at Abbey Woods Academy in Berinsfield as pupils and staff mark Earth Day.

The event held annually on April 22 promotes support for environmental protections and has grown since its inception in 1970 to encompass over one billion people in 193 countries.

This year’s theme is "Planet vs. Plastics," calling for a drastic 60 per cent reduction in overall plastic production by 2040.

Last month saw students participating in The Big Plastic Count, a nationwide initiative counting plastic waste for a week.

Shockingly, the found that UK households discards an enormous 1.7 billion pieces of plastic every week.

Besides this, the students have been developing wildlife habitats by planting a variety of tree saplings around their school field.

These will mature into a hedge row, adding to last year's efforts and supporting a rich tapestry of wildlife.

In line with these environmental efforts, the academy’s curriculum includes the rising stars geography module.

This equips the students with knowledge about diverse environments and relationships between people and Earth.

The headteacher of the academy, Sophie Charter said: "At Abbey Woods Academy we believe it’s important that children learn about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability and celebrating Earth Day is a great reminder to encourage us to come together and take action for a healthier planet and brighter future."
