Real Madrid simply know how to win European competitions; their record in finals has been imperious since one night in 1983 when they went toe-to-toe with the Dons.

Aberdeen were written off as just a bunch of lads from Scotland who stood no chance when they set off travelling to Gothenburg to face Los Blancos, despite their own tremendous form under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But they stunned the continent and lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup, which to this day remains the most remarkable achievement in the club's long history.

Eric Black opened the scoring at the Ullevi Stadium, but despite Juanito's equaliser soon after, it would be John Hewitt that would place his side in the history books in extra-time.

Since that rainy night in Sweden, Real have been unstoppable, despite the likes of Juventus, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid all trying to take home the Champions League trophy.

Borussia Dortmund were looking to stop the 14-time winners of the competition at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night as they aimed to add to their sole Champions League success in 1997.

But it wasn't to be, as Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior downed the Germans to win a 15th Champions League and yet another under Carlo Ancelotti who secured his fifth as a manager.

Aberdeen fans however have been quick to remind everyone on social media that they still hold the record of being the last team to beat Real Madrid in a European final.

Los Blancos have in fact never won the now defunct European Cup Winners' Cup, losing to Aberdeen in 1983 and falling to a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea in 1971.

Whoever gets over the line and downs Real will need something special in their locker, but for now the record stays intact and memories of 83 continue to live on.
