Academy Awards organisers have come under fire for omitting Batman actor Adam West from the In Memoriam segment.

Stars including Sir Roger Moore, Gleene Headly, John Heard and Jerry Lewis were among those honoured in the annual montage which was accompanied by Eddie Vedder’s cover of the late Tom Petty’s Room at the Top.

But West, who played the caped superhero in Batman: The Movie, was snubbed in what fans have branded an “absolutely outrageous” move.

The actor, who also starred in Robinson Crusoe on Mars and The Outlaws Is Coming, died aged 88 last June after a “short but brave battle with leukaemia”.

One Twitter user posted: “Why was Adam West missing from the ‘In Memorium’ section? If it weren’t for him, we probably wouldn’t have Batman today. His contribution to film and TV will never be forgotten. #Oscars.”

Another tweeted: “Since the #Oscars didn't include him in their ‘In Memorium’ segment. I want to say You are missed, Adam West. Thank you.”

Other stars omitted from the segment, which was introduced by actress Jennifer Garner, included Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper, Oscar winning actress Dorothy Malone and Alfie director Lewis Gilbert.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences post an In Memoriam gallery online, which usually includes those who failed to make the not mentioned in the broadcast.

This year’s awards saw Gary Oldman and Frances McDormand continue their awards haul as they picked up Best Actor and Actress respectively.

The duo have dominated awards season for their roles in Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water swept the board, picking up the coveted Best Picture, Best Original Music Score and saw del Toro crowned Best Director.
