Adan Canto Remembered as “Designated Survivor” Cast Reunites for Memorial: 'We All Came to Say Goodbye'

Adan Canto's Designated Survivor castmates and colleagues are paying tribute to the late actor with a touching reunion.
Weeks after news broke that Canto died at age 42 following a reported private journey with appendiceal cancer, fellow stars of the ABC and Netflix drama gathered outside of a memorial service in Iowa for an emotional get-together.
In a photo shared by friend and actor Maggie Q, Canto's other castmates can be seen smiling and posing in front of a theater marquee which read, "In loving memory of Joseph Adan Canto, 1981-2024."
Canto's wife Stephanie, former costars Kiefer Sutherland, Kal Penn, Italia Ricci and LaMonica Garrett, series creator David Guggenheim and costume designer Nancy Gould were all tagged in the photo.
"We all came to say goodbye 💔," Maggie Q captioned the image. "Love you forever friend, till we meet again 🕊️ 👑."
Guggenheim shared the same image with the caption, "Family forever. Miss and love you, Adan." Garrett also posted the group image on his page, calling the last few days "a rollercoaster of emotions" as he tagged the location of Clear Lake, Iowa — where Canto's obituary noted a funeral service took place at the Surf Ballroom & Museum on Friday.
"Back and forth from tears to laughter at the drop of a dime. Truly was a celebration of life for a great human being. And going through this with our Designated Survivor family was special. @adancanto you will be missed brother, @stephanie.a.canto we love you and we'll be back soon. 🙏🏾 #adancanto ❤️."

Canto played the role of Aaron Shore in Designated Survivor, which ran from 2016 to 2019 and starred 57-year-old Sutherland as Tom Kirkman.
Paying tribute earlier this month, Sutherland called the fellow actor a "wonderful spirit," sharing an Instagram image of the pair laughing together.
"It seems lately I have had to make too many posts like this one, but I am heartbroken by the loss of Adan Canto," Sutherland wrote at the time. "He was such a wonderful spirit. As an actor, his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive and he will be greatly missed."
"I am also heartbroken for his wife Steph and his two young children," he added. Adan, may you rest in peace."
Penn, who played Seth Wright on the show, shared his own carousel post of on-set photos, calling the news of Canto's death "absolutely heartbreaking."
"He was so genuine and warm, immensely talented; such a good person who was simultaneously calm and motivating," Penn, 46, wrote. "And funny. He was very, very funny. I’m so lucky to have known him. My heart goes out to Steph, the kids, and the whole family."
Other castmates, including Ricci and Garrett, shared posts this month in honor of Canto, whom Garrett remembered as someone who "exuded both confidence and humility effortlessly."

Canto's wife paid tribute to her husband — and the father of their son, Roman Alder, 3½, and daughter, Eve Josephine, 1½ — by quoting the Bible verse Mathew 6:19-21 shortly after his death.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal," she wrote on Instagram. "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Stephanie concluded, "Forever my treasure Adan, see you soon 💔."
