Air Ambulance called after car crashes into Weymouth seafront bar

Two people have been hospitalised after a vehicle crashed into a seafront bar. Emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle crashed into the outdoor seating area of The Nook bar on The Esplanade in Weymouth, Dorset after 12.20pm on Friday (June 28).

Witnesses heard "screams" in the immediate aftermath as people rushed to the popular bar to help. Firefighters from Weymouth helped make the scene safe and assist in rescuing the stricken occupants of the vehicle.

Police officers shut the Esplanade to allow emergency services work at the scene and investigate the circumstances of the collision. Weymouth Beach was also closed and cleared to allow an air ambulance land.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service: "We were called to the Esplanade in Weymouth at 12.24pm today (28 June) after a car collided with a metal canopy. Two crews from Weymouth attended and firefighters have secured the canopy and established a safety cordon.

"They have also been supporting colleagues from the other emergency services."

A witness told Somerset Live that he was walking away from the area when he heard and saw the aftermath of the crash. He said: "I didn't see the crash but I heard the aftermath. There was a lot of panic and I just saw loads of chairs and tables all over the place with the car underneath the canopy.

"I hope they (people inside the vehicle) are alright and not badly injured. Thoughts also go out to the team at The Nook bar who will be gutted with what has happened."

As emergency services responded to the crash, residents and visitors were warned not to enter the water while RNLI lifeguards are assisted. A RNLI tannoy announcement said: "We advise you do not enter the water as due to an ongoing incident lifeguards are not currently watching the water."

The air ambulance landed and took off from the beach.
