A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers are in attendance at the scene along with colleagues from the East of England Ambulance Service, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the Air Ambulance Service.”

Police have shut the roads and asked motorists to “please avoid the area at this time and seek alternative routes.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "Two ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle, and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

"An adult man was transported by road to Harefield Hospital for further treatment.”

The fire service has one engine in the road, to assist the ambulance service.

According to One Network, there are currently Cadent roadworks under multi-way traffic signals in Barton Way, for utility asset works, although it has not been confirmed that the digger was related to the works.
