The 40-year-old comedian has compared himself to the breakfast condiment Marmite that’s loved and loathed in equal measure and thinks he would also divide the nation if he was to take the reigns on the popular baking show.

He told Nick Grimshaw during the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show today: “I love Channel 4 but no-one has approached me. But I don’t think I could do it. I think it [Great British Bake Off] is too loved. I’m like Marmite.”

Paul Hollywood, pictured above right, is the only star willing to move from the BBC to Channel 4 next year and the hunt is now on to replace the winning presenting team that currently includes (above L-R) Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins and Mary Berry.

But the Chatty Man host won’t be swayed and joked he’s too over-weight to be the face of the Bake Off brand.

He said: “I went on a treadmill. You know the bottom bit of your gut? It slid over the top and pressed the emergency stop button. That’s bad when your own fat turns the machine off. So I can’t do it.”

Alan, you’ll always be a delicious strawberry jam to us.
