Alan Shearer sparked amongst concern amongst viewers tuning into Saturday night's Match of the Day, as the Newcastle United and England legend sounded under the weather during the Euro 2024 broadcast.

A man who knows a thing or two about delivering the goods in a major football tournament, having been the shining star of England's Euro 96 campaign, Alan is, as expected, back on the BBC pundit team for this year's Euros in Germany, with him joining colleagues Gary Lineker, Micah Richards and Cesc Fàbregas on location in Germany for reigning champions Italy's opener against Albania.

The quartet discussed Italy's chances this time round, as well as identifying some of their opposition's key players in the run up to the 8pm GMT start and, before a ball had even been kicked, some fans watching at home were quick to pick up on Alan's sore throat, which only seemed to get worse as the show went on.

Taking to X, one viewer wrote: "Alan shearer has gotta get on the strepsils he sounds like Sean Dyche" as another posted: "Someone get @alanshearer a hot toddy! Alan was back on screen at the break, to discuss the very entertaining first half and, as he delivered his verdict, more reactions came into his hoarse sounding voice, as another fan commented: "Why does Alan Shearer sound like the Geordie Phil Mitchell" and a fourth remarked: "you ok Alan sounding a bit croaky"

Before kick off, both Alan and BBC host Gary spoke out nin support of their former Match of the Day colleague Alan Hansen, after it was revealed that the Liverpool player turned top pundit was seriously ill in hospital. Speaking live on air, Shearer said: "We are all great friends with Al. We know he's a character, we know he's a fighter, we know how tough he is. So we're thinking of you big man and we're hoping, we're praying for you."
