Grimsby Town have announced the departure of midfielder Alex Hunt on a permanent deal to National League side York City.

The move follows his time spent on loan with the Ministermen in the second half of last season, making nine appearances for York as he helped them secure survival in the National League on the final day of the campaign.

The 24-year-old joined Town on a three-year deal in the summer of 2022 after enjoying a successful loan spell at Blundell Park in the first half of the 21/22 season. The permanent switch from Sheffield Wednesday did not pan out as either party would have hoped, with Hunt making just 19 league starts across two years.

The midfielder was never able to lock down a regular starting spot, initially under Paul Hurst, who brought him to the club and now David Artell, who has allowed him to pursue this new opportunity at York following the temporary switch.

The former Ireland youth international had some moments of promise in a Grimsby shirt, but it was expected by most that his time at the club would come to an end before the conclusion of his contract, which was due to run out next summer.

This latest departure is further indication of the Mariners intention to start afresh under Artell, who has a different vision for how the team should play in the future compared to what has been seen in recent years.

Town released 11 out-of-contract players this summer and have also seen Harry Clifton reject a new deal and depart for Doncaster Rovers. Hunt’s departure leaves the club with 12 contracted players as it stands adding the first signing Tyrell Warren.

Callum Ainley and Denver Hume have also been offered new deals, with the former reportedly close to agreeing to terms, while the latter is still assessing his options.

Hunt departs having made a total of 61 appearances with his initial loan spell included, with three goals and two assists to his name.
