What is Alexander Skarsgård's role in new Mr & Mrs Smith series?

Mr & Mrs Smith has finally dropped on Prime Video, and among the star-studded cast (hello Donald Glover and Maya Erskine), you may be surprised to see Succession's Alexander Skarsgård, who also makes an appearance in the series, but what is his role exactly?

If you haven't seen Mr & Mrs Smith yet, its an adaptation of the 2005 movie of the same name. However, in the series version, John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine) Smith are recruited by the same spy agency to be a married couple as their cover, while carrying out covert spy missions.

But how does Alexander Skarsgård come into the series? And what is his role? Here's what you need to know.

Who does Alexander Skarsgård play in Mr & Mrs Smith?

Ahead of the release of Mr & Mrs Smith on Prime Video on 2nd February, the streamer released the first two minutes of the series early on 31st January, starring Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza Gonźalez.

In the opening clip we see Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza Gonźalez relaxing on a porch, drinking a bottle of wine and watching a squirrel. However, their peace soon gets disturbed by an oncoming vehicle. The pair race inside before Eiza's character Jane says she can't run [away] anymore and they kiss, before Alexander's character says they can stop running.

The teaser clip lead to many Alexander fans wondering what his role could be and more importantly made them more excited to watch the series. One person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): "Now why am I just finding out Michaela Cole, Parker Posey, Paul Dano, and Alexander Skarsgard are in that new Mr. & Mrs. Smith show?!! A very delightful lineup, I might have to be seated."

And another said: "Well nobody said Alexander Skarsgård was in it." While another said: "I see Alexander Skarsgård, I gasped & added the series into my tbw list."

However, we hate to be the bearer of bad news but Alexander's role doesn't continue on for much longer after this two minute clip. It is revealed that Alexander and Eiza's characters are another John and Jane Smith aka spies who have been recruited by a mysterious agency, and likely Donald Glover and Maya Erskine's characters' predecessors.

The opening scene continues with the pair trying to fight their unknown assailants, however let's just say it doesn't end well with the couple.

Thankfully the series is still full of surprise appearances from actors including Parker Posey, Paul Dano, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Paulson and Michaela Coel. Honestly, what a stacked cast.
