Chelsea add Gianluigi Donnarumma to transfer shortlist as AC Milan target Alvaro Morata

Chelsea have added Gianluigi Donnarumma to a three-man short-list including Kasper Schmeichel and Petr Cech as options to replace keeper Thibaut Courtois.

The club are resigned to selling Courtois to Real Madrid for £35.5m but won’t let him go until they bring another goalkeeper in first.

Real Madrid have until August 31 to complete the Courtois transfer, however the introduction of new regulations means the transfer window shuts in just three weeks’ time in England.

Chelsea have already missed out on their first-choice target as Liverpool will complete a £67m deal with Roma for Alisson once the Brazil international passes a medical.

The Blues are still looking in Italy as a potential source to fill the void and are considering making a move for AC Milan’s 19-year-old keeper Donnarumma.

AC Milan need to sell players to invest in the transfer market this summer having been found in breach of Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules. It has led them to being banned from the Europa League next term.

They still want to be busy in the market though and have made an inquiry for Chelsea’s unsettled striker Alvaro Morata.

A straight swap deal is unlikely, but there is the possibility of each club selling their talent to the other, although Morata’s minimum asking price of £58m is slightly higher than Donnarumma’s value.

The 19-year-old, who has already played over 100 games in Serie A, struggled for form last season and came under heavy criticism from fans during contract negotiations.

In May, AC Milan’s sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli admitted that the Italy international might be allowed to leave.

He said: “If a good enough offer arrived, any of our players could be sold. There are far richer clubs out there and we have to choose other paths.”

A major stumbling block for Chelsea though is that he is represented by agent Mino Raiola, who they don’t have the best relationship with after missing out on Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku in the past two years to Manchester United.

Schmeichel is a genuine possibility even though he has three years left on his current deal at Leicester City.

The 31-year-old is unsettled at King Power Stadium and it is believed Chelsea are huge admirers of the Denmark international.

Schmeichel enjoyed a fine World Cup and will crucially count as a homegrown player because he has spent his entire professional career in this country.

No move has been made by Chelsea for their former keeper Cech, who joined Arsenal in 2015, but he is in their thoughts.

Cech has just one year left on his contract at Emirates Stadium and is facing increased competition for his first team spot following the arrival of Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen for £22m this summer.

The 36-year-old won 13 major trophies with the Blues between 2004-15, but is understood to be fully focused for the start of the new season with Arsenal and is ready for the challenge Leno and David Ospina provide.

Jordan Pickford is also admired at Chelsea, yet following his World Cup exploits there is an acceptance that it will be very difficult to prise him out of Everton just a year after his £30m transfer from Sunderland.
