Allison Janney Is Looking for a Romantic Partner Who's Funny — 'and They Must Love Dogs' (Exclusive)
The Oscar winner is currently starring in the new Apple TV+ comedy 'Palm Royale'
Allison Janney admits dating in the public eye can be a bit “difficult.”
“I think it's harder because people assume a lot,” says The West Wing alum, who stars in the upcoming Apple TV+ comedy Palm Royale. “If they see you with someone, then that's your significant other, and it's not always the case.”
The Oscar winner, 64, finds for going to red carpet events, “it's better to bring a friend than a boyfriend. Because I think some boyfriends tend to mistake a red carpet event as a date, and it's not a date. It's a work event.”
As much as there’s a level of glamour, “it is not a date night,” Janney explains. “So people who go expecting it to be a date night are usually disappointed and upset having to hold my purse and ‘Can you move over to the side?’ That stuff. It’s definitely hard to date someone and deal with that whole circus.”
When it comes to that perfect partner, Janney is looking for “someone who has got a great relationship to the world, first of all, and they're extremely funny,” she says. “Someone who makes me laugh and appreciates me.”
Any deal breakers? “Yeah. Smoking, alcoholic. Mean-spirited, people that are mean to waiters. I like people to be kind,” she says. “Kind and generous. And they must love dogs. If they don't love dogs, that's nope. Can't. Nope. Pass, swipe, whatever you say.”
Janney’s perfect day off on her own entails “waking up with no meetings, nothing to do,” says the actress, who has three dogs. “I would go out for a hike with them and come back and eat something fabulous."
While not a big cook herself, she tells PEOPLE: "I’m a homebody. I love to just be in my home and watch movies, have people over who do cook to cook for me and play board games. That’s all I need. That’s all I want.”
