'I am not here to back him' - Andre Onana opens up on Erik ten Hag's Manchester United future

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has responded to the pressure on Erik ten Hag amid uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag ended his second season in Manchester United in eighth-placed after one of the worst Premier League campaigns in the club's history. Pressure has increased over the months for Ten Hag with calls coming from certain corners for him to be sacked during the summer and ahead of next season.

United are operating under the working assumption Ten Hag will remain in charge next season although the Manchester Evening News understands Ratcliffe is "not completely sold" on the Dutchman.

Next week's FA Cup final with Man City is United's final chance of qualifying for the Europa League and many have tipped the Dutchman to be axed if they fail to do so. However, Onana has backed 'good things' to come for the former Ajax boss.

Speaking on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, he said: “I don’t see any difference [in the way Ten Hag manages United in comparison to Ajax], I think he’s the same guy. Listen, we are the same guys, we are the same players, he is the same manager that I knew in Ajax, he will not change in one or two years. I am not here to back him, because he’s big enough to [back himself].

“Last season was fantastic for him. So, it’s just a bad season. So for me, last season I was the best, so for this season, we have a different goalkeeper? No, it’s the same guy.

“He’s just facing difficult situations, and we are big enough to accept the reality, because if we want to make things well, we have to accept the reality and we have to go [in on the] front foot. So, I think he’s the same manager. He’s just facing different, difficult situations and hopefully things become good for him.”

The goalkeeper also admitted it's been 'a bad season for all of us' but has promised improvements from himself and his teammates next year. He added: “It’s football – I think it’s about moments, and we faced a lot of injury crises, lost a lot of important players – but of course, it’s not an excuse. It’s just a bad season for all of us, and we have to stay positive as we are doing at the moment. I know everything will be alright – if not this season, it will be next year.”
