Amal Clooney UN dress: This black button-down was a page out of Jackie O's playbook

Amal Clooney’s style might be far less important than her work as an international human rights lawyer, but on Tuesday she offered another masterclass in workwear dressing.

Clooney was in New York for a meeting with the United Nations Security Council, where she wore an outfit which channelled former First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

Her classic black knee-length dress, which featured a row of black buttons running down the front, was accessorised with a black leather tote, 'greige' heels and a pair of large round sunglasses. Sophisticated yet utterly professional, it was the epitome of workwear chic.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis frequently wore all-black ensembles in a similar shape, often opting for two pieces with button detailing.

Onassis was also renowned for her oversized sunglasses.

An equally chic button-down dress has been worn previously by Amal Clooney's friend the Duchess of Sussex, who opted for a style with a longer A-line shape.

Meghan wore the black dress to the opening of the ANZAC Memorial at Hyde Park in Australia last year, during her tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand with Prince Harry.

Clooney’s visit to the UN was to ask members to vote on a resolution to condemn the use of rape as a weapon in war. She delivered a speech in which she told members of the council that it was their “Nuremberg moment”, in which they could stand on the “right side of history” by voting in support of the resolution.

She was accompanied by Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad, a survivor of rape at the hands of ISIS and an activist recognised for her commitment to anti-rape campaigning.
