Amanda Abbington has made a career announcement, revealing that she has secured a significant role as the lead in the theatrical memoir When It Happens To You.

The 52-year-old actress expressed her excitement about joining the cast. This news comes hot on the heels of reports that her former Strictly Come Dancing partner Giovanni Pernice quit the dance contest.

Amanda's career continues to evolve with her involvement in the When It Happens to You project, which draws from Tawni O'Dell's experience of keeping her family unified following a pivotal life incident. Sherlock star Amanda, who has revealed she was unable to put down the book the show is based on, is leading an ensemble cast.

The director is Jez Bond, Artistic Director at Park Theatre. Amanda shared: "When Jez sent me When It Happens to You, I immediately read it in one sitting I couldn't put it down. The story is important and necessary, and the characters are nuanced, complex and completely relatable.

"The Mother character of Tara is a gift of a role for any actor, and I'm thrilled to be working with Jez Bond who I know will direct the piece with the care and sensitivity it deserves.", reports the Mirror.

Jez added: "When It Happens to You is an important, timely and powerful piece of theatre. I'm thrilled to be working with Amanda Abbington who read the play and, like me, immediately felt compelled to do it.

"The best theatre is often a story told simply that connects to the heart of the audience, and I can't think of a more powerful play to present within the intimate setting of Park200. By equal turns heartbreaking and hopeful, we invite you in to experience this truly theatrical page turner."

This follows reports, as writes the Mirror, that Giovanni Pernice has left Strictly Come Dancing despite being in discussions for another series. The BBC was reportedly "very keen" to continue their partnership with the 33-year-old Italian dancer, who has faced criticism over his rigorous training methods from previous celebrity partners, including Amanda.

An internal memo detailing this year's professional dancers for the competition was distributed without his name included. Reports suggest that Giovanni is now looking for new opportunities on other TV shows.

The BBC issued a statement regarding Giovanni's future amid these reports, stating that names will be 'released in due course'.

Amanda, who had voiced complaints about his training methods, exited the show in October. She later disclosed that she was diagnosed with mild post-traumatic stress disorder following her stint on the competition.
