American Horror Story: Cult's opening titles revealed

From Digital Spy

In February, as the United States was recovering from one of the most controversial presidential races in its history, Ryan Murphy made us all a promise: that the new season of American Horror Story would be throwing us right back into the insanity and getting all political.

Of course, when the name of the new season, Cult, was announced, there was much speculation about how this would tie in with that aforementioned political theme, with Ryan Murphy stating that "the first 10 minutes of this season takes place in a very eerie, macabre way on election night".

Add to this Evan Peters' jazzy blue clown hair and suggestions of a romance between his character and Sarah Paulson's, and we were already psyched for what would potentially be the most 'American' horror story yet.

And if the newly revealed opening titles sequence for season 7 is anything to go by, it looks like we were right...

A few things of note:

1. Is it just us, or does the remixed theme music remind anyone of the House of Cards theme, just a little bit? Blame the trumpets.

2. It looks like Ryan Murphy's statement that this season would be based around the 2016 election was, unlike many political promises, completely true. Hello Donald. Hello Hillary.

3. Bees. So many bees. Sorry to any melissophobics out there, but it looks like the whole 'hive mind' aspect of cult mentality will be a focus of this season.

4. You know that trick in the circus when a bunch of clowns climb out of a car and everyone laughs because how the hell did they all fit in there? Yeah, not so funny when they're climbing out of a coffin. Especially when they look like the clown from It.

5. And then there's the dead dog. And the creepy man in the gas mask. And the clown-filled carousel in the background. Cool. We're not quite sure what this has to do with politics or cults but we really don't like it.

6. Intersperse all these lovely images with flashes of a bloodied American flag, a George Washington figurine and a magician pulling something very dead out of a hat, and needless to say, the parallels drawn between the political landscape in America and an actual circus are NOT subtle.

The seventh season of American Horror Story premieres in the UK on Fox on September 8, 2017. Until then, you can find out everything we know about the season so far right here.
