American Idol has crowned the winner of its 22nd season.

Airing last night (May 19) in the US, the latest run of the singing competition crowned Abi Carter as its newest champion.

Abi auditioned with Billie Eilish's Barbie song 'What Was I Made For?' and sung the song again during the finale, as well as her original song 'This Isn't Over', Bon Jovi's 'Bed of Roses', and the West Side Story song 'Somewhere'.

Elsewhere during the live shows, in which she never placed within the bottom two, Carter sang Taylor Swift's 'All Too Well', Elton John's 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road', and Evanescence's 'Bring Me to Life'.

Fellow finalists Will Moseley and Jack Blocker ended up placing second and third, respectively.

"I have been a fan of American Idol my entire life, so I've been telling myself since I was a kid I would do it when I'm old enough, and I guess this is just me doing it," she said in her audition.

Katy Perry called her "an example of singing from your heart" and told her that she was made for this competition, while Luke Bryan and Lionel Ritchie said right off the bat that they could see her as the season's winner.

This is Katy's last season on American Idol, as she announced in February that she is stepping down.

"Well, you know, this fall, this September, I'm going to be doing this huge music festival in Brazil called Rock in Rio," she said.

"It's really exciting. It's a big deal for people all over the world, especially my Brazilian fans. So I think this will probably be my last season for Idol. I love Idol so much. It's connected me with the heart of America but I need to feel that pulse of my own beat."

American Idol airs on ABC in the US, and streams on Hulu.
