Alan McInally has claimed that Andy Robertson is only Scotland captain because he 'plays for Liverpool'.

Robertson, 30, who joined the Reds from Hull for £8million in July 2017, has become an integral part of the Liverpool side over the past seven years. In fact, the left-back has made 297 appearances for the Anfield club, winning the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup among other honours.

He is still firmly first-choice at the Reds and could be crucial under Arne Slot next season. Alongside this, Robertson featured for Scotland at Euro 2024. He played in every minute of their three Group A matches as they picked up just one point, finishing bottom of the group and being knocked out at the first hurdle.

The post-mortem from Scotland's disappointing Euro 2024 campaign has already started, with questions facing boss Steve Clarke over his team selection. And now, ex-Tartan Army striker McInally has questioned why Robertson remained as skipper for the tournament, outlining one reason why that was the case.

Speaking to Betfair, McInally said: "I wouldn't have minded Scott McTominay or John McGinn becoming Scotland captain. Steve Clarke has gone for 'Robbo' for the simple reason that he plays for Liverpool. He's had an unbelievable good three or four years and he knows him and the lads look up to players like that. And he has a little bit more seniority than McGinn and McTominay.

"That's why he's the captain and I don't have a problem with that. But I think if you said to Robertson, look, I'm going to give it to McTominay or John McGinn, I think he'd be like, we're a team here. It's not all about me. It's not who's the captain.

"In terms of the captaincy, we've got three players that could be captain. Maybe four if you throw in Grant Hanley, because he has over 50 caps, and he just brings a little bit more steel to our back line. But out with that. We don’t have any captains in the team - we don’t have anyone that carries that gravitas."

Robertson is set to enjoy a break from football before teaming up with Slot and the Liverpool squad for pre-season. The Reds get their Premier League campaign underway with a trip to newly-promoted Ipswich on Saturday, August 17, before matches against Brentford and Manchester United to end the first month.
