Some locals have hit out at the 'disgraceful' state of Canley Garden Cemetery, with one saying it was the 'worst kept' in Coventry. It has become overgrown with grass and weeds due to 'extremely wet' conditions in the West Midlands - but some on social media in Coventry are fuming.

Families have said that in recent days they have struggled to find where their loved ones are buried at Canley Garden Cemetery on Cannon Hill Road. Grass can be seen covering headstones, which some people on forums in Coventry have slammed as 'disrespectful.'

Coventry City Council told CoventryLive that they have been unable to cut the grass due to the weather being 'extremely wet' in April and May. Works that would begin in March have for this reason been delayed.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said on Friday, May 10: “Due to the extremely wet start to the grounds maintenance season which typically begins in March, we have not been able to complete the start of season cut and weed spraying as we usually would.

“As the weather has been warmer this week, we have been able to complete 80 per cent of the mowing at Canley Garden Cemetery and the strimming will be completed today (May 10) and tomorrow (May 11). All grounds maintenance should be completed next week.”
