Anne Hathaway Broke Her Arm After Extreme Starvation Diet For Les Miserables

She's just celebrated an Oscar nomination for her role as Fantine in 'Les Miserables' but the role didn't come without a lot of hard work on Anne Hathway's part as her co-star reveals she even broke her arm during her extreme starvation diet.

Anne shed nearly two stone for her role as a starving prostitute in Tom Hooper's epic, which opened in UK cinemas yesterday (January 11). Despite only appearing in the film for 30 minutes, Anne was so dedicated to her role that she practically starved herself to achieve her character's emancipated look.

According to the actress' co-star, ten-year-old Isabelle Allen who plays her daughter Cosette, Anne lived on "rabbit food" during the shoot. The young Brit actress had lunch with Hathaway in New York after the film’s premiere last year and Anne was apparently craving the chips that Isabelle was eating.

"She said “this is real food” or something like that. Well it was because obviously she’d been eating... I call it rabbit food, because she was only eating salad and greens and vegetables because of her diet, because of her character," Isabelle said according to the Mail Online.

She added that her on-screen mum had broken her arm because "she was so thin and fragile. She was riding a bike and she broke her arm".

Meanwhile, Anne herself has refused to reveal details of her diet, so she doesn't encourage anyone to resort to such extreme weight-loss measures.

In a recent interview the star revealed she had shed 25lb for the role – 10lb in three weeks before filming and 15lb during production. "I just had to stop eating for a total of 13 days shooting," she said.

Whilst she (rightly) remained coy on her diet, Anne was happy to talk about her Academy award nomination this week, revealing that her new husband Adam Shulman was equally ecstatic when she heard the news:

She told E! News: ''I was just in bed and I was watching TV and they said my name. He was screaming louder than me!"

"I think we might have scared the dog. I cried a lot and he hugged me and we kissed. It was really sweet.''

Aww! We're sure Adam will be by Anne's side at next month's Oscars...
