Illuminated 3D planet Earth installation, Gaia, is returning to Merseyside for a three-day stay.

Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram, measuring six metres in diameter and created from detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. Liverpool locals last caught a glimpse of Gaia as the 'Floating Earth' during its stay at the Royal Albert Dock in April last year and again at Runcorn's Norton Priory in January.

Gaia is on the move again, and will be taking up residence in Birkenhead Park from Tuesday, May 28, until Thursday, May 30.

It is an accompanying piece to Luke’s similar work, the Museum of the Moon, which was displayed in Wirral at Birkenhead Town Hall as part of Wirral's Borough of Culture celebrations in 2019.

An events programme will accompany the Earth on behalf of Wirral Council and Walk the Plank inspired by the area's unique location and heritage including singing, dancing, painting and more.

Bev Ayre, senior producer at Walk the Plank, said: "We’re delighted to bring some Walk the Plank magic to Wirral’s Borough of Culture and to showcase Gaia, local artists and community groups in an inventive programme of activities and events."

The full programme will be published nearer the time here.
