Piers Morgan has revealed that Ant McPartlin’s estranged wife Lisa Armstrong is going through a “tough time” in the wake of their split and his ‘drink-driving’ arrest.

McPartlin announced the end of his 11-year marriage to the make-up artist earlier this year. On Sunday he was involved in a three car crash in Richmond, west London.

Discussing the recent events on Good Morning Britain, Morgan said Armstrong is struggling to cope with having her private life made public.

He said: “When it comes to sympathy, sympathy for the family in the other car is paramount. Sympathy for Dec whose own career is being massively damaged by this by default.

“Sympathy for Ant’s wife Lisa, she’s been going through a very tough time in the public eye. She’s a very private lady and she’s having to have all her stuff poured out.

“This is a hard time for a lot of people.”

McPartlin was arrested after he crashed his vehicle into two cars, leaving a three-year-old girl in hospital after he lost control as he approached a roundabout.

He was taken to a South London police station after failing a roadside breathalyser test, before later being released.

On Monday it was revealed McPartlin is returning to rehab to “seek treatment” and will not be taking part in the final episodes of Saturday Night Takeaway.

Morgan expressed concern for McPartlin, saying his life is “faltering”.

He said: “He’s definitely changed, no question.

“Lisa [Armstrong, Ant’s ex-wife] does my make up on Life Stories, she’s a delightful person.

“I never would have thought he’d [get divorced] for example, let alone this. This Ant McPartlin is not the guy I know. His life is faltering and tormented for some reason.”

Morgan's comments come a day after Armstrong hinted that she has been left feeling lonely in the wake of her split from the TV star.

She liked a tweet from Simon Thomas, who lost his wife Gemma to cancer last year, which read: “You never realise how lonely you are until it’s the end of the day and you got a bunch of things to talk about and no one to talk to.”
