Ant McPartlin will return to television, when he’s “well and fit enough,” an ITV boss has confirmed.

Talking to ITV News, ITV’s chief executive Carolyn McCall said, “He will come back when he’s well and when he is ready to come back.

“ITV will not be putting him under any pressure to come back unless he’s well and fit enough to come back.”

McPartlin, who has struggled with drugs and alcohol addiction, was readmitted to rehab after a drink-driving conviction in March.

When asked for clarification of his return to the channel, McCall confirmed, “As far as I know, that is true.”

McPartlin has been a staple of British television for over 20 years – with the hugely popular Ant & Dec double act with friend and work partner Declan Donnelly – first launching in 1988.

The troubled television host and presenter’s battle with alcohol and drugs were exposed last year, followed by a stint at rehab and the caught on camera drink and driving incident.

Ant was twice over the legal drink driving limit. After pleading guilty, he was fined £86,000 and placed under a 20-month driving ban.

And in January this year, Ant’s shock split from wife of 11 years and Strictly Come Dancing makeup boss Lisa Armstrong was publicly announced.

To date, Declan Donnelly has carried on their hosting duties solo.

While Dec presented the last two episodes of Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and the entirety of Britain’s Got Talent live shows solo, whether Ant will join him for his upcoming I’m a Celebrity….Get Me Out of Here! duties remains unconfirmed.
