Anthony Gordon looks up to Mohamed Salah when it comes to his planning and mindset for matches. For Liverpool it is something that now, more than ever, will grab their attention.

The Newcastle winger has emerged as one of the players to watch now this summer. Not so much because of his game time (or lack thereof) at Euro 2024 with England, but because Eddie Howe's men floated the possibility of actually moving on from him.

Gordon only moved to the northeast from Everton last year. It set the Magpies back over £40million and in the months since he has become an international regular (even if he isn't used as much as many may have hoped). With 11 goals and 10 league assists at St James' Park, Gordon is now an established forward.

At 23 he is primed to develop more in the coming years as well. Liverpool didn't bite on the offer of Gordon though, with Arne Slot's attacking stocks already pretty full. Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez are all senior options who can play off the left, and there is no shortage of other advanced forwards elsewhere either.

One of those available to Slot is Salah. The Egyptian winger is still not certain to stay at Anfield this summer given the long-term links to Saudi Arabia and his contract situation. Talk of an exit has been quieter in recent weeks, but Gordon's comments about preparing for games demonstrates just how influential Salah still is.

“My confidence comes from my preparation," he told The Overlap podcast earlier this year. "I don't know where it comes from, I wouldn't say anyone around me is anything like that.

“I just love learning stuff, and throughout my years growing up, I've taken a liking to learning about psychology. There may be people who do the same thing as me, there may be loads who just haven't spoken about it.

"Some footballers like to think less, just turn up and play and trust their instincts. I just love the mindset of getting myself in that place before I'm already there.

“I saw Mo Salah talk about it - that's where I took even more interest, because I see him as an absolute machine and a winner. People like that, you're not going to go too far wrong following what they do.”

Gordon could, in the next few months, be following Salah in a very different way. He is said to have had his head turned at least partly by the prospect of joining Liverpool, who he has already admitted he supported as a boy.

There is still a way to go for anything to happen here, and a deal would rely on significant movement away from Anfield for Diaz, or maybe even Salah despite Gordon playing on the opposite side primarily. But if his words ring true then he will be ready for anything, and he could be following Salah in more ways than one.
