Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon reportedly spoke to his England team-mates over the prospect of signing for Liverpool.

According to The Telegraph, the 23-year-old discussed the idea of returning to Merseyside during the Three Lions' ongoing Euro 2024 pursuit after reports of a move ignited. Last week, the Magpies were under pressure to offload some of their players in order to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules as they strayed close to the red line with the accounting deadline on June 30.

Liverpool rejected the chance to sign the Kirkdale-born forward after being approached by Newcastle but the Reds are admirers. However, the ECHO understands that they feel they are already well-stocked in the department with Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo - who has illustrated his capabilities on the left for Holland this summer - all capable of operating from the left of a front three.

Newcastle seemingly alleviated the threat of being put under investigation by the top flight after offloading Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for a combined fee of around £65million.

In their report, the Telegraph has claimed that the player wanted the transfer to go through but Liverpool failed to make a bid, while the numbers discussed were too low to make a dent on the Magpies' PSR deficit. They added that although there was 'desperation' from Newcastle, it didn't stretch as far to let their £40million forward leave the North East at a bargain price.

It has been said that the club will look to ensure the 23-year-old re-settles at St James' Park, following reports that his head was turned by the interest, and as far as they are concerned, he is not for sale.

The fanfare from Liverpool supporters and Gordon has increased in recent weeks following the news. The reports coincided with the Liverpudlian discussing his appreciation for former Reds captain Steven Gerrard and making a glowing affirmation about playing at Anfield.

"Other than St. James' Park, it's Anfield by far. I think because I'm from the city, it's probably like I grew up watching it. But I just think before the game when they sing You'll Never Walk Alone, it's top, top level," he said when asked about the best stadium he has played in.
