Anti-Government Protesters Flee Tear Gas in Lome

Protesters in Lome, Togo, gathered en masse on August 19 to demand the ruling Gnassingbe family surrender power and the country to return to the constitution of 1992, which re-established multi-party democracy in the country.

Several people were reportedly killed and injured after large scale protests turned violent. These videos show protesters running as police fire tear gas to disperse the demonstration.

President Faure Gnassingbe was elected in 2005 after the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadéma, who took control of Togo through two military coups in the 1960s and was widely regarded as a dictator. Credit: Twitter/Emmanuelle Sodji via Storyful
