Anti-White Supremacy Protesters March on University of Florida Campus

Demonstrators protesting white supremacy and neo-Nazism marched on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida, on October 19, as white supremacist leader Richard Spencer spoke at a campus event.

The protesters held signs and chanted slogans such as, “When black lives are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back.”

The speech was not a university event, in that neither university officials or any associated organizations invited Spencer to speak on campus. University officials have been under fire from students for allowing Spencer to speak on campus, but officials said they were required to approve the event because the university is a public institution.

Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for Alachua County ahead of the speech to allow for additional security measures including state police presence, according to reports. Credit: Instagram/Andrés G Otero via Storyful
