‘Anyone but You’ Thrives, ‘Mean Girls’ Less So on PVOD as Tyler Perry Is #1 Again at Netflix

Through Sunday, “Mean Girls” (Paramount, $72 million) was the highest-grossing domestic film two months into 2024. (“Bob Marley: One Love” will overtake shortly, and “Dune: Part Two” might do even more for its opening weekend.)

Its total is $15 million less than, though still quite close to, the longer-running “Anyone but You” (Sony), similarly with significant female appeal. But the results for the first week with both available show that Will Gluck’s Australian-set rom-com is doing much better at home than the musical remake of the hit 2004 high school clique satire.

Meanwhile, little is more normal than a new original Tyler Perry film placing immediately at #1 on Netflix. “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland as an attorney who takes on a tough murder defense to enhance her chances at partnership at her firm, is the hyphenate’s first film since 2022 and third consecutive production for the streamer.

“Anyone but You” has a slight edge over “Mean Girls” in its pricing. The former can be digitally purchased for $19.99, while that price yields a 48-hour rental (purchase for now is $24.99). But the difference is stark — “Anyone but You” is #1 at iTunes and Vudu, #2 at Google Play (often lagging in elevating new releases), while the best position for “Mean Girls” is third at Vudu, its higher price helped with the site ranking by revenue. And even there, it lags behind the fourth week of “Wonka” (Warner Bros.).

But elsewhere, “Mean Girls” is surprisingly low at #9 on iTunes and #10 at Google Play, the lowest relative performance of the five films that placed everywhere; apart from “Anyone but You” and “Wonka,” the others are the longer-running “The Iron Claw” (A24) and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (Lionsgate).

Oscar-nominated “The Zone of Interest” (A24) is the other new release to chart this week, currently at #5 at iTunes. Returning to iTunes’ top 10, “Dune: Part One” (WB) has the distinction of reaching both VOD and Netflix’s charts simultaneously (it’s also streaming on Max). At a $3.99 rental, “Dune: Part One” is currently #3 at iTunes, while Netflix (which ends its showings Thursday) has it at #8.

“Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” a Dreamworks Animation film released by Universal last summer to only a $15 million domestic gross, was #1 at Netflix for much of the week until “Mea Culpa” debuted. Two new originals, both European, charted — “The Abyss,” a thriller from Finland and Sweden, is #3, and “Through My Window 3: Looking at You,” the latest entry in that rom-com franchise, is #7.
