Mary Berry has admitted that she isn’t a fan of avocado on toast, preferring to pair the fruit with prawn cocktail.

The former Great British Bake Off legend insisted that she isn’t that on board with the trendy dish, dismissing it as a 'craze'.

Berry told Radio Times: “It's very fashionable now to prepare avocado on toast. I can remember when we didn't have them at all - now they're everywhere.

“But this isn't one of the nicest things to do with them.”

The 82-year-old continued: “Better to add them to a prawn cocktail or to a little plate of smoked salmon or shrimps. And I love prawn cocktail - it's so retro!

“Do it in a glass, with a little gem lettuce leaf. People used to laugh at prawn cocktail because it felt dated, but it's coming back.”

Last month, it was rumoured that Berry had raked in £400,000 in her first year away from the baking competition, which she left after it moved from BBC to Channel 4 in a lucrative deal.

Berry has taken part in a number of other shows including Mary Berry Everyday and Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets.

Mary Berry Ltd has seen its assets rise by £350,000 to £1.6 million while profits at Mary Berry Merchandising also saw a £50,000 increase following the expansion of her brand.

The baking queen is thought to be worth around £15 million despite departing from “soggy bottoms” Bake Off, which she first started on seven years ago.
