Attention, gamers: not only is there a great little mini-game hidden inside every Nintendo Switch console, there's a really great reason behind it. Touching, even.

For those of you who haven't yet spotted it, you can play the NES game Golf on your Switch, a title programmed by the late Nintendo president Saturo Iwata.

Unfortunately, you may have missed your chance, as you need to have kept your Switch away from the internet and on version 1.0.0 (via Nintendo Life).

If you've got that nailed down, then all you need to do to access the game is set the date of your Switch to 11 July, the day Iwata passed away.

For those of you left ruing a missed opportunity, you can take comfort in this genuinely moving theory about the game itself instead.

Justin Epperson, senior associate producer at 8-4, revealed to Twitter what he thinks the meaning behind the game is.

"Golf is imbedded in the Switch firmware and JP internet is calling it an 'omamori' or charm from Iwata (he coded the game himself)," he explained.

"In Japanese culture omamori are bought at shrines for various reasons, if you keep one close to you it will protect you or give luck...

"So the idea is Nintendo imbedded Iwata's game to watch over every unit and thats f**kin me up good rn (sic). That man was loved."

Now excuse us while we go and cry into our Switch.
