DC's Birds of Prey movie has an extremely funky title, but where did it originate from?

Recalling similarities to 2014 film Birdman's full title – which is Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) if you were wondering – a recent image of the Birds of Prey script posted by star Margot Robbie unveiled the project's complete, if not slightly long-winded, name.

Yep, alongside Birds of Prey, Robbie had written in "(And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)", which was later confirmed to be the film's official title by Warner Bros.

Now, the film's writer Christina Hodson (who also wrote Transformers movie Bumblebee) has been chatting to Collider about the movie and explained where that unique title came from.

"It was an unofficial aka, when I wrote the script," she said. "I added it about a year or so ago, almost exactly as it is, just as an aka. I didn't think we'd ever use it. We'd always used a working title, so I just had it as a cheeky little thing, on the front cover.

"And then, when we were talking about a title and brainstorming, we all kept drifting back to that one."

So it's a title that started off as a joke but then became the real thing, and when the interview then added that it sounds like a title that says a lot about the film's tone, Hodson was quick to agree, adding: "Exactly!"

Margot Robbie will be reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn in the film, which will also star Fargo pair Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead involved, plus True Blood actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell.

It was also confirmed back in October that Rosie Perez has joined the project, portraying a gay Gotham City police detective who simultaneously stalks the streets as a superhero named The Question.

Filming is expected to get underway at the beginning of 2019, ready for Birds of Prey to land in cinemas on February 7, 2020.
