Nick Knowles seemed to be in his element in the I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! jungle, taking on cooking duties, handling critters and sporting those skimpy red Speedos, but the TV presenter has admitted he was hiding an injury.

The DIY SOS star said he kept it private because he didn't want the "sympathy vote", telling Lorraine Kelly on her ITV breakfast show: "I had an injury before I went.

"About five days before I went in, I basically compressed a couple of vertebrae in my neck and tore two ligaments in my shoulder. So I was in an MRI machine just two days before I went out and then when I got to Australia I had four cortisone injections in my shoulder. [The show’s medic] Doctor Bob would come and check up on me."

What a trooper. Nick continued: "I didn't want the sympathy vote – just do it and get on with it and get through and out the other side. That's why I'd sit in that freezing cold pool because it would freeze my shoulder. I hate cold water as well.

"It'd go numb and I'd get about an hour's worth of relief off of it."

It also explains his rather strange way he did a press-up, which host Declan Donnelly affectionately mocked during the show.

"Bob said you can either attack it or give up. I can't go up on my left arm, which ended up with the strange 'humping motion' [when doing press-ups]," he explained.

The TV star also revealed that King of the Jungle Harry Redknapp had a "dizzy" moment while they were showering, adding: "I noticed [Harry's] lip was dropped on one side. I immediately was like, 'I want to get the medics in here straight away. He's almost 82, I want to make sure he's okay.'

"It turned out what it was, he was a little low on body sugars, which was making him dizzy. Bit dehydrated, which made him dizzy. Actually, he'd got a bite on his lip from one of the trials, which made his lip swell, which made him look lower on one side – enough signs for me to go [and get help]."

He's only 71, Nick! But we'll let him off for being such a considerate campmate.

Anne Hegerty recently revealed that Nick would get very protective over his fellow co-stars, which often wasn't shown on the series.

"I don't think they’ve seen how protective [Nick] gets with the other campmates, and how he'll have blazing rows in the Bush Telegraph if he thinks the rest of us are being put at risk in any way," Anne disclosed.

Nick missed out on the final which saw Harry being crowned king, and Emily Atack coming in second place.
