Joe Marler, the England and Lions loose-head prop, has signed a new long-term contract that will keep him at Harlequins until 2021.

The 51-cap former Quins captain follows fellow England international Chris Robshaw in committing himself to the Premiership club by signing an extension to his deal.

John Kingstongreeted the news of Marler’s deal by predicting the 27-year-old would become an even bigger force at club and Test level. Quins’ director of rugby said: “At 27, excitingly, he is probably only now coming to the peak of his potential. Joe is now established as one of the best loose-head props in world rugby.

“He has displayed a real commitment to the Harlequins cause over many years and is another member of the squad who has only ever known one club. This news offers a further massive boost to the squad as we prepare for the start of our campaign.”

Marler said: “Re-signing for my childhood club has made me very happy. John Kingston has recruited strongly over the summer and he is starting to really mark his identity with this exciting group of players. I strongly believe we have a squad capable of going places and I am really excited for the new season.”

Marler’s club debut was in 2009 and he has made 152 appearances, scoring seven tries.

A member of England’s 2016 Grand Slam-winning campaign, he also played a significant role in securing the 2017 Six Nations title.
