Warning! Spoilers for season two of Jessica Jones lie ahead.

The f**ked-up, tortured relationship between Jessica Jones and David Tennant's Kilgrave was a standout moment that played out in season one, but for those of you who have already gotten through Jessica Jones' second season, you'll know there's not much Kilgrave to be found.

As well as the practical reasons of a character being dead and all, there's a profound reason why Tennant's demented, mind-controlling Kilgrave only appeared in one episode.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about Jessica Jones' future after Kilgrave, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg explained that the character's prolonged involvement in season two wouldn't have felt "organic".

"Last season examined [Jessica's] experience with [Kilgrave], and I think you can kill it and come to terms with it, but it never goes away," she said. "You don't walk that off and keep on going.

"It's always going to be a part of your experience and part of your psyche. We knew that throughout season one, that it was always there."

Tennant did appear in one episode, where he returns as a triumphant and taunting hallucination following Jessica's murder of a man in self-defence.

"It's everything Kilgrave thought she was and wanted her to be: a killer. It's once again in the overarching theme: 'Who am I?' It smacks her in the face. He's given voice at that moment.

"It's a very organic way in [to Kilgrave's return]. I just adore David Tennant and I love writing that character, but that's not enough to put him in the episode."

Fortunately for Jessica, she manages to overcome her guilt and takes a different path to the one Kilgrave hoped she'd take – in other words, she finally won their battle.

Hinting at the definitive end of Kilgrave, Melissa added: "[His] return has to drive Jessica's story, otherwise it's going to just feel plopped in there."

We're rooting for you, Jessica!

Jessica Jones seasons one and two are available on Netflix now.
