Aquarius Compatibility: How the Air Sign Pairs with Each Zodiac

From fellow air signs Libra and Gemini to earth signs like Capricorn, here's everything to know about Aquarius compatibility, according to astrologers

Aquarians are full of curiosity, intellect and eccentricity — all of which tend to come out in their relationships.

Since it's the last air sign in the zodiac calendar, those with an Aquarius sun sign “tend to ponder over matters thoroughly before making decisions,” Lisa Stardust, astrologer and three-time best-selling author, tells PEOPLE.

They tend to get along well with fellow air signs Libra and Gemini, also known to seek intellectual stimulation, says astrologer Alberto Toribio.

“The element of air makes them cerebral, lounging in the world of intellect,” Toribio says, adding that Aquarians have “a desire to know and build their way of life around abstract logic and reasoning.”

Despite their social nature and fun-filled friendships, Aquarians can be emotionally distant, Stardust says, which can lead to trouble in romantic relationships.

As we head into Aquarius season, which runs from Jan. 20 to Feb. 18., read on to learn more about the zodiac's compatibility with other signs.

What are the key traits of an Aquarius?

According to Stardust, Aquarians are revered for their “independence, intelligence and analytical abilities.” Their introspective nature can lead others to perceive them as quiet.

Those with an Aquarius sun sign are also known to be quirky and have a variety of interests.

“Aquarians are compassionate, humanitarian and generous, with a unique and sometimes eccentric perspective, which makes them the rebels of the zodiac,” Stardust explains. “They tend to see things the way they want to see them rather than how they are.”

Toribio points out that an Aquarius’ curiosity and intellect are often apparent in social situations.

“They like to be in the know of what's going on in the world and be on top of what's the next big thing,” the astrologer says. “You can see them running through different social circles, a demonstration of their vast knowledge and interest.”

Which signs are Aquarians most compatible with?

Generally, Aquarians get along well with the other air signs (Gemini and Libra), who share similar temperaments and interests. However, other seemingly opposing signs also have compatibility with Aquarius.

Gemini

Aquarians are bound to share fun, stimulating conversations with Geminis.

"These two friends can chat endlessly and share many laughs,” says Stardust. “They will broaden each other's thinking and provide new perspectives to consider. They’ll transcend each other’s mind to new limits.”

Toribio notes that Geminis are “extroverted gossips” who love learning, traits that align well with the sociable Aquarius.

Friends alums Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox’s decades-long friendship is proof that an Aquarius-Gemini bond is built to last.

Libra

Like Geminis, Libras appreciate beauty and intellect but tend to move at a slower pace — a trait that Toribio says Aquarians admire.

“Libra is a lot calmer than a Gemini, refining and intellectualizing beauty in the world,” he explains.

Aquarians and Libras are also likely to enjoy a mutually supportive relationship.

“These two air signs can be great friends because they will push each other to achieve greatness,” Stardust shares. “They won't hold each other back, and they will stand and support each other in times of need or struggle.”

Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen are a good example of this compatibility. The couple have been married since 2010 and share three children, cheering each other on red carpets and social media.

Capricorn

Positioned next to each other in the astrology wheel chart, Aquarius and Capricorn have strong compatibility, according to Stardust.

"Aquarius and Capricorn are neighboring signs, which allows them to learn from one another,” she says. “They can offer words of wisdom and companionship, which makes them great friends and lovers."

Stardust adds, "Their similarities bring them closer together in the sky, fostering a sense of closeness between them.”

Patrick Dempsey and his wife Jillian — a Capricorn and Aquarius match — have been going strong since they wed in 1999 and share three kids.

Leo

Aquarians are also compatible with the sign opposite from them on the zodiac wheel — Leo. Toribio says that Leo’s thirst for life helps to fuel the ever-ambitious Aquarius.

“Aquarians have a desire to not only defy the world but be validated by it,” he explains. “When it comes to their partner they seek someone who reflects and embodies the things that they find beautiful."

Toribio continues, "A Leo lives their life trying to stroke and grow themselves, a quality that Aquarians do find admirable.”

Leo Mila Kunis and Aquarius Ashton Kutcher exemplify this compatibility well. The pair have been married since 2015 and share two children.

Which signs are Aquarians least compatible with?

The groundedness of earth signs and deep emotions of water signs can lead to conflict in relationships with Aquarians. There may also be tension with the other “fixed” signs, specifically Taurus.

Taurus

Fixed signs like Aquarius tend to be set in their ways, so trouble can arise when paired with another fixed sign like Taurus. Toribio notes that both parties’ “hesitation to change or meet someone halfway” is often a source of conflict.

Taurus’ desire for stability may also clash with Aquarius’ rebellious attitude, Stardust says.

“Although these two signs may attract each other, they might find it challenging to bond and connect over matters due to their differing ideals and ways of dealing with situations,” the astrologer explains.

Virgo

Virgo is another earth sign Aquarius may not jive with.

“It can be hard for Virgo to comprehend what's going on in Aquarius' mind,” says Stardust. “Just when Virgo thinks that they've figured out Aquarius, they'll change their perspective, making Virgo have to start from the beginning and figure out a whole new perspective."

Cancer

Water signs are known for being emotional, so Cancer’s need for affection and validation doesn't align with Aquarius.

“Aquarius can be more distant and impartial, which can sometimes lead to conflicts between the two signs,” Stardust says.

What is Aquarius' compatibility with other signs?

Aquarius shares an interesting bond with another fixed sign, Scorpio. While Toribio notes that Aquarians can become frustrated when water signs lead with their emotions, Stardust says that these two can have a positive relationship.

“They find a lot of resolve and comfort in one another,” she says. “Both are evolutionary and transformative and open to an ideology ahead of their time. They will fully lean into each other's spirit by trying to implement radical changes.”

Just look at Scorpio Matthew McConaughey and Aquarius Camila Alves, who have been married for over a decade.

Fire signs are hit or miss when it comes to Aquarius compatibility. Because of its opposite placement on the zodiac wheel, Leo tends to be Aquarius' most compatible fire sign, but Aries and Sagittarius also possess some beneficial traits.

Toribio says Aries’ energy and adventurous spirit is great for exploring Aquarians’ various interests, but Stardust warns that Aries’ assertiveness can be overwhelming.

“Aquarius can have a harmonious friendship with Aries if the ram doesn't become too assertive,” she says. “It would be best to strike a balance where they can have a peaceful relationship without the overwhelming drama and thrill that Aries tends to bring.”

Meanwhile, Aquarius and Sagittarius share a desire for enlightenment, making them a good match for a fulfilling relationship.

“They are both independent and adventurous, and once they make a positive impact on the world, they tend to focus on the present and future rather than dwelling on the past,” Stardust says. “They prefer to move forward and evolve together.”

Sagittarius Katherine Heigl and Aquarius John Kelley have been married since 2007 and share two children.
