Is there alien life beneath the surface of Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus?

This week, a NASA probe will fly through a plume of ice erupting from the frozen surface - in an attempt to find out about the ocean that lies beneath.

The historic fly-by will bring the probe to within 30 miles of the surface.

NASA’s Cassini probe has been exploring Saturn and its moons for more than 10 years.

The probe has observed the geyser-like plumes of ice which erupt from the surface before - but last month sent back observations which seem to suggest there could be liquid beneath the surface.

If there is liquid water, there could be life, scientists believe.

Dr Curt Niebur said, 'Cassini truly has been a discovery machine for more than a decade.

'This incredible plunge through the Enceladus plume is an amazing opportunity for Nasa and its international partners on the Cassini mission to ask, "Can an icy ocean world host the ingredients for life?"'
