With a country facing decline, politicians shouting about the "will of the people" and a sibling rivalry that is threatening to tear the Royal family apart, you could be forgiven for thinking this is a television show about modern events.

However, this is the setting for the new series of The Crown, which promises to be the most explosive yet, with the trailer showing a glimpse into arguments in the Palace set against raging protests outside.

Olivia Colman is seen making her debut as the Queen, taking over from Claire Foy — and she does not seem happy.

In the new footage she is preparing for her silver jubilee and considering the impact she has had during her reign, saying in voiceover: "On days like today, ask yourself in the time I've been on the throne what have I actually achieved?

"This country was still great when I came to the throne, all that has happened on my watch is the place has fallen apart."

Helena Bonham-Carter plays a feisty Princess Margaret, and the trailer shows a recreation of husband Lord Snowdon's controversial 1962 picture of her taken the bath while wearing her tiara.

The series will take a dark turn straight away, with the monarch facing her darkest time on the throne yet as she battles sibling rivarly, the country's bankruptcy, the miners' strike and national security ahead of the 1977 Silver Jubilee.

Prince Philip, played by Tobias Menzies, believes the Royal Family is at risk of collapsing as Prime Minister Harold Wilson, Jason Watkins, makes his first appearance.

The Prime Minister says: "The will of the people has changed".

Prince Philip then replies: "If that man wins he will want us out."

An adult Prince Charles makes a brief appearance in the trailer, and it seems his love life will be a major theme of the series.

Josh O'Connor plays him as he becomes Prince of Wales, and he is advised: "Never turn your back on true love and watch out for your family."

When he replies, "They mean well," he is told, "No, they don't."

Camilla Parker-Bowles, played by Killing Eve writer Emerald Fennell, is seen in the bath as the Prince lovingly looks on.

Hinting at pressures over his romantic choices, the trailer shows an argument between the Prince of Wales and the Queen.

He shouts: "Am I listened to in this family? Am I seen for who and what I am? No."

The Queen can be heard replying: "We all have a role to play, we have all made sacrifices and suppressed who we are. It is not a choice it is a duty".

The new series of The Crown launches on Netflix on November 17.
