Former midfielder Wesley Sneijder has warned incoming Liverpool manager Arne Slot not to sign too many Dutch players for the upcoming season as he shapes his Anfield squad.

The current Feyenoord boss is the man who has been chosen to replace Jurgen Klopp at the club when the German leaves at the end of the season. The Reds have reached an agreement with the Dutch side over a compensation package.

Plans will already be being put in place for the summer transfer window. There has already been talk of him turning back to Feyenoord for some reunions at Anfield in the new season.

But the incoming boss has been warned by Sneijder about relying too much on players of his own nationality. The former Netherlands international has used his own time at Real Madrid as a warning to Slot.

"I would be careful with that, with bringing in too many Dutch people,” Sneijder told fcupdate.nl, (via Sport Witness) “I experienced that in Madrid.

“When I came, only Ruud van Nistelrooy, Royston Drenthe and Arjen Robben were there. And the following year, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Rafael van der Vaart arrived.

“If the four of us play football somewhere, we’re not going to talk Spanish to each other, you keep talking in your mother tongue anyway. You shouldn’t start attracting too many Dutch people to you.”

Liverpool have three Dutch internationals in their squad currently in Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch. They have been tentatively linked with Lutsharel Geetruida in the last few days, with the defender adding to those rumours by attending Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with West Ham at the London Stadium at the weekend.

Plans for next season will now be taking place at Anfield with the club’s hopes of winning a second title under Klopp effectively over. The Reds are in third place in the table, five points behind leaders Arsenal but Man City, in second by just one point, do have a game in hand over both teams.
