Anthony Gordon continues to be credited as the player who could be Liverpool's first signing of the summer.

The Reds have had a quiet window so far in terms of new additions to their squad. Arne Slot is yet to make his first signing as head coach, but there is still plenty of time for that to change before the window closes later this summer.

Gordon has emerged as a potential target for Liverpool, with the former Everton star's future at Newcastle United increasingly uncertain. The St James' Park club were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), and there are still question marks over whether Gordon may also need to leave for similar reasons.

As a result, those Gordon links haven't gone away - even with Newcastle's June 30 PSR deadline having passed this week. A new wide forward has been suggested in the Anfield rumour mill but it remains to be seen if any players will be signed and, if so, if Gordon is the preferred target.

Gordon plays on the left wing for Newcastle, which is typically the position operated by Luis Diaz at Liverpool. Diaz's future has also been questioned in recent months, with reports that Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing the Colombia international.

Liverpool will be under no pressure to allow Diaz to leave the club this summer, with the forward contracted at Anfield until 2027. However, if Barcelona or PSG do make an offer then discussions will need to be made about his future.

If Diaz does leave then that would only increase the likelihood of a replacement being signed. Whether that would be Gordon, though, is still uncertain.

Should Gordon be signed he could be one of the first-choice options on the left wing for Liverpool. Cody Gakpo can also play in that position, as can both Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.

Mohamed Salah has the right wing spot and has very little competition unless a new signing is made. Through the middle, though, the Reds have Jota and Nunez battling for the centre forward role.

Alisson Becker is still the number one goalkeeper at Liverpool and looks set to continue in that role into next season. With no new centre-back signed at present, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk could be the starting duo for the new campaign, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson at full-back.

Slot will have several options to choose from in midfield. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were signed by Jurgen Klopp last summer and could be regular starters this term, but will face competition from fellow 2023 signings Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones will also be making claims to be part of Slot's ideal starting line-up. Stefan Bajcetic may also be under consideration as the midfielder aims to put his injury concerns behind him.
