Arson investigation launched after bank holiday weekend blaze at business park

A fire at a disused barn is being treated as arson, the fire service has confirmed.

Firefighters from Cleveland Fire Bridge rushed to Kirkleatham Business Park, in Redcar, on Saturday following the blaze. Three fire trucks attended and crews could be seen using a hose reel to extinguish the flames.

The bridge has now confirmed to Teesside Live that the blaze is believed to be arson. A spokesperson said: "In regard to the fire at Kirkleatham Business Park in Redcar on 04/05/2024 the cause is believed to be deliberate."

Pictures from the scene show three fire engines and an additional Cleveland Fire Brigade car in attendance. Plumes of smoke filled the the sky at the derelict detached property.

The brigade previously released a statement warning Teessiders to avoid the area on Saturday. A spokesperson said: "We currently (04/05 @ 16:49) have three fire appliances in attendance at a building on fire on Kirkleatham Business Park. Please avoid the area whilst we deal with this incident."

A Cleveland Police spokesperson added: "Police were contacted by our Fire Brigade colleagues just after 4.45pm on Saturday 4th May reporting they were at the scene of a large fire in an empty building in Kirkleatham Business Park.

"There was no requirement for officers to attend however the fire is being treated as arson and enquiries are ongoing."
