Asda customers have expressed their unease on social media following the supermarket's decision to slash its Blue Light discount scheme on fresh food. The change has impacted how Blue Light Card holders, who are emergency service workers, can accumulate rewards in their cash pot for certain purchases.

Previously, Asda allowed these cardholders to enjoy a 10% discount on fresh food through the Asda Rewards app, but this benefit has now been reduced by half. Disappointed shoppers took to social media platforms to voice their concerns, with comments such as: "Such a shame! I don't think it will be worth going to Asda over Aldi," and "No point going Asda anymore."

While some tried to find a silver lining, saying: "It's been great while it lasted... 5% is better than nothing," others were perplexed by the complaints, with one user stating: "People complaining about something they get for free will always baffle me.."

According to The Mirror, this marks the second significant alteration to the Asda Blue Light Card scheme within a year, having already narrowed down the range of items eligible for discounts last June. Before the changes, cardholders could also earn an additional 10% in their cash pots when buying homewares, health and beauty products, baby items, outdoor goods, toys, laundry essentials, and pet products.

The supermarket giant has scrapped its Blue Light Discount card scheme and replaced it with a new rewards programme which offers exclusive ways for card holders to boost their cashpots, reports Chronicle Live.

An Asda spokesperson said: "Asda has worked with Blue Light Card since 2022 and we have saved blue light workers millions on their shopping in that time. We're now introducing new and exclusive ways for card holders to boost their Asda Rewards Cashpots, as well as offering 5% back in Cashpots on fresh food purchases."
