Aston Villa have enquired about Chelsea full back Ian Maatsen, while they try to hammer out transfers for Conor Gallagher and Jhon Duran, according to The Telegraph.

Maatsen had looked to be joining Borussia Dortmund on a permanent basis, having been with the Bundesliga outfit for the second half of last season.

However, Telegraph reporter Matt Law has revealed that Borussia have balked at the £35million release clause in the 22-year-old’s contract, opening the door for the likes of Villa to swoop through.

Maatsen is a left-back/wing back who has been at Chelsea since arriving from PSV in 2019. He has played just a handful of games, instead spending much of his time out on loan with Charlton, Coventry, Burnley and Dortmund.

Maatsen was part of the team which reached the Champions League final and is currently with the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024.

Villa currently have Lucas Digne as first choice left back and there have been reports of Alex Moreno returning to Spain.

Villa are also keen on Chelsea team-mate Conor Gallagher, who is also at the Euros in Germany and who yesterday spoke of his desire to concentrate on his international commitments before tending to his club situation. Tottenham are also believed to be interested in a £50m deal.

The piece says Villa have given Chelsea permission to talk to Duran over personal terms.
