Former Aston Villa striker Alan McInally doesn't believe Conor Gallagher would be a good signing this summer.

Unai Emery is believed to be a big fan of the Chelsea midfielder, who has a £50m price tag this summer. Gallagher has 12 months left on his current contract, but could be reluctant to move to the Midlands this summer.

Villa have already dealt with Chelsea twice this summer, buying Ian Maatsen for £37.5m and selling Omari Kellyman for £19m. Villa also gave Chelsea permission to speak with Jhon Duran after broadly agreeing a deal worth around £40m, but the move appears to have stalled.

“Nope… I don’t think he’s good enough to play for Aston Villa," McInally told "He’s a good player, he’s done alright but I can’t for the life of me understand how he got in the England squad and plays in front of some other players.

Then again, that is the choice of Gareth Southgate. He has to stand by that. I don’t see Conor Gallagher making Aston Villa any better.

"I want players to come to my football club that are exceptionally better than Conor Gallagher and that’s just the way I feel.

"He’s a good player, he’s done very well for himself but I don’t see him being an Aston Villa player. I don’t know how much he’s going to cost but at the same time I don’t see the fit there.”

Villa have signed five players so far this summer and sold another three. Douglas Luiz joined Juventus for £42m after the sales of Tim Iroegbunam to Everton for up to 13m and Kellyman to Chelsea for £19m.

Lewis Dobbin was first to sign for £9m from Everton, before Enzo Barrenechea (£6.8m), Samuel Iling-Junior (£11.8m) and Ross Barkley (£5m) have followed Maatsen through the door.
