Avengers 4 feels like the end of an era (as well as Marvel's Phase Three) as all the threads of Thanos's plotting come together. But it also might mark the departure of one of the MCU's biggest stars – Chris Hemsworth.

The actor who made his Marvel debut in 2011's Thor has revealed that – now the untitled Avengers movie has finished filming – his contract with the studio is technically complete.

"Contractually, right now – yeah, this is it. I'm done," he told USA Today. "I won't be playing the character again.

"It's sort of a scary thought. This really seemed like this never-ending thing. And now it's potentially finishing."

Let's not start dressing in black and filing down to the cemetery just yet, as Hemsworth is still keen to carry on as Thor if he can, and has been speaking with Ragnarok director Taika Waititi about a fourth movie.

"I felt like we re-invented [Thor]," he continued. "There is a bigger platform now to continue if we want to.

"[Marvel Studios president Kevin] Feige said, 'Look, we just have to concentrate on [Avengers] now. So who knows? There are 76 cast members in these two Avengers films. They will be the biggest films of all time, far bigger than my character.

"It's a conversation for further down the road, if it was going to happen."

To be perfectly honest, we can't imagine Marvel letting Hemsworth go if he doesn't want to. Remember that Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man contract was supposedly up years ago, and he's still showing up all over the place.

Hemsworth, Downey Jr and every other MCU actor you can think of will be back for Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel.

Avengers: Infinity War will be released in the UK on April 27, 2018, and in the US on May 4, 2018, with Avengers 4 coming to the UK on April 26, 2019, and the US on May 3, 2019.
