'Average' Tottenham must spend to compete with the Premier League elite

Tottenham have been warned they will need to splash the cash if they ever want to compete at the elite end of the Premier League.

Despite a decent performance, the North Londoners fell to a dramatic 2-1 defeat at Anfield against table-topping Liverpool.

But it appears Pochettino and the Spurs hierarchy need to do more if they are to be taken seriously as challengers in future.

“They absolutely need to spend money if they want to get to where Liverpool have got to, and where Man City are,” Yahoo’s Head of Sport Raj Mannick told The Football Show.

Following a dismal run in the league that has seen them pick up just one point in five games, Spurs have gone from a title challenge to barely clinging on to a top four position.

He added that the small squad is being stretched with no decent replacements ready to deputise.

“There’s no-one else really pushing players like Ali, like Eriksen. There’s no one else really challenging those creative players.

“Spurs don’t really have a plan B from the bench. The starting eleven is fantastic, beyond that they are very average.”

Pochettino’s men remain third in the table but are level with fourth place Manchester United and just one point ahead of London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea – in fifth and sixth respectively.
